​​​Fenelon Falls is where ‘Our Story’ begins....

Karen moved from a small village of Corfe Mullen, near Wimborne in Dorset, England in June 2007, bringing with her, her love of baking and cooking, together with her recipe for shortbread and other baked goods.

In October 2010, Karen met Ross, a genuine ‘Fenelonite’, born and raised in Fenelon Falls - the ‘Jewel of the Kawarthas’.  Ross introduced Karen to butter tarts!

Karen exclaims, “Shortbread isn’t just for Christmas!”  In 2013 Karen and Ross baked up enough goods to feed an army and attended the LEX Christmas Craft Show.  With huge success, the idea of Kawartha Shortbread was born!

In 2014, Kawartha Shortbread opened for just one day a week – Saturdays (as Ross and Karen were still working full-time jobs).

At the Kawarthas Northumberland Butter Tart Taste-Off in Peterborough in 2016, Kawartha Shortbread placed 1st with our Maple Pecan butter tart and 3rd with our Coconut butter tart.  As a result of the 1st place, Kawartha Shortbread was given a complimentary entry into Ontario’s Best Butter Tart Festival in Midland, in June 2017.

In September 2017, again at the Kawarthas Northumberland Butter Tart Taste-Off, Kawartha Shortbread proudly took 1st place in the ‘Best of the Best’ category, defeating all previous 1st place winners.

With that excitement and the experience of Ontario’s Best Butter Tart Festival in Midland in 2017, Kawartha Shortbread decided to enter again in 2018 and that time bringing home to Fenelon Falls, the Award of 2nd place in the Professional category.  Over 175,000 butter tarts were for sale on the streets of Midland that day!

With these awards, customer support, encouragement from family and friends, together with determination, the inspiration to expand Kawartha Shortbread to a full-time café/bakery became a reality.  Welcome to our dream come true!
